The Magic & Mystery theme of Wild Wild West Steampunk Convention 9 allowed me to go back a lot further in time than I usually do with these sets, to include some silent era gems, not just from George Méliès, who's becoming well known to steampunk fans, but also his Spanish equivalent, Segundo de Chomón. The first set only featured two films, released 117 years apart. I also played to the theme a lot, especially on Sunday, with a set that focused on magic and mystery even if these films stretched the definition of steampunk rather ruthlessly. There are steampunk elements to each of these, but they may not be the focal points. Of course, most of the films were far more recent than the silent era and they're as international as always, with the sixteen films screened hailing from eight different countries. What's more, the most represented country was France (with five films, only two of which were by Méliès) rather than the USA (with only three films). |
