This year's LepreCon was a quieter affair which didn't help my audience, but I screened a set of new material to some interested and engaged folk who came back each day for the next set, the audience growing in the process. As with LepreCon 41, I programmed two 90 minute sets of short sci-fi films and a third of short steampunk films but, at the request of the chair, Mandy Parker, I also added fantasy into that mix. This was interesting because fantasy is such a wide genre that I was able to explore all sorts of directions and I'm thankful for the opportunity. I'd screened all the steampunk films before, though not at LepreCon, but the other two sets were mostly new to my mini-film festivals, period. I did include a couple of shorts that I'd screened in the horror sets at FearCon de la Muertos!, a couple that I'd screened in my book set at Cirque de Livre and another sci-fi short that I'd screened in California, but everything else was entirely new. Because I was short of time, with so many events needing sets in such a short period, I found many of these on Vimeo using the Creative Commons license search to ensure that I'd be legally allowed to screen what I found. Others, as always, are films that I've had my eyes on for a while for particular events, having seen them during the year at film festivals, through submissions or from other research. |
